Winter holiday ideas for kids of all ages

The shortest day of the year has passed us by, bring on spring we say! Until then, there are some great events happening around Christchurch. With school holidays currently in full swing, this month's focus is on activities for the kids. Never fear though, for the bigger kids (or "adults" if you prefer) we have some entertaining events that will help beat those mid winter blues.

For the kids:

TV2 KidsFest

TV2 KidsFest

Started in 1992, the TV2 KidsFest has become one of New Zealand's favourite festivals, especially for children. The 14 day event has a wide range of fun and educational activities that will keep kids entertained over the winter school holidays. Primarily based in Christchurch, the event also caters for those in Banks Peninsula, and the Waimakariri and Selwyn Districts. This year's theme is "Where in the World is CoolStuff?" Our pick of the best events include:

Scoot and Skate

Suitable for kids of all ages, the Scoot and Skate event will feature performers, prizes and demos.

Date: Sunday, 13 July
Time: Sessions at 10am-11am (3-7 years) and 11am-1pm (all ages)

FlatmanFlat Mans Superhero Training Academy

Kids will have the chance to join Christchurch's very own caped crusader Flat Man and learn what it takes to be a Superhero! The training academy will include a bunch of great activities including a mega obstacle course. Aimed at 5 - 12 year olds, food stalls will have food and drinks available for purchase.

Price: Free entry if dressed as a superhero, otherwise gold coin donation

TV2KidsFest Stage Show with Craig Smith

Aimed at 4-10 year olds, this stage show will be jam packed with laughs, singing and a whole heap of fun. It features the fantastic Wonky Donkey man, Craig Smith along with Jono and Natalie, APRA finalists for the New Zealand Children's Song Award.

Time: Shows at 10am, 12noon and 2pm

For big kids:


The University of Canterbury Students' Association are kicking off semester two with their ever popular re-orientation festival. Along with a selection of concerts and day events, there are a couple of shows open to the public including:

Guy CaterThe Hypnotist

Ever wanted to be hypnotised? Perhaps you want help to quit smoking or have always wanted to cluck like a chicken on command... Well here's your chance! Legendary hypnotist Guy Cater will have you in fits of laughter as he uses his extensive skills to hypnotise a selection of audience members game enough to get on stage.

Comedy Club

As they say "laughter is the best form of medicine", so if you're feeling in need of a good chuckle then be sure to come along to Comedy Club. Jeremy Elwood, a regular of the NZ comedy scene, will headline the night, his insights, observations and often outrageous opinions will have you in stitches. He is joined by Jamie Bowen and Tim Batt who have also appeared on 7 Days, and a range of other shows including Jono and Ben at 10. Don't miss this one, doctor's orders!

Continuing on the comedy theme, another show worth noting is:

Crackup Comedy with James Nokise

James Nokise, a two time Billy T nominated comedian who is "intelligent, witty and hilarious" will headline a huge night of comic brilliance. He will be complemented by support from local comedians, Mexican wrestler turned comedian El Jaguar, and Bigger than Beetles - an A Capella musical comedy duo.
