Places to go after dark in Christchurch

  • Scared Scripless Comedy
  • Late night tour Christchurch Art Gallery
  • Murder Mystery Heathcote

If you’re a night owl, we have a bunch of ideas on what to do in Christchurch after dark.

Stranges Lane, Corner of Manchester and Lichfield Street, CBD

The perfect place for late night antics and just a stone's throw across the road from the old Sol Square. Orleans serves up the best chicken waffles and jazz music, or head to Strange & Co for moonshine cocktails and loud music every Thursday to Saturday. Be prepared to queue or else get in before the crowds.

Dux Central, Poplar Lane, CBD

Looking for great food, beverages and live music? Hear from local and international artists touring New Zealand. Check out their Facebook for upcoming events. Downstairs is the Pot Sticker Dumpling Bar if you are craving some carbs, and you can go fancy with classic cocktails at the Poplar Social Club if you're in the mood.

Smash Palace and Brick Farm, High Street, CBD

Just around the corner from Dux Central is Brick Farm restaurant and bar (featuring a roof top view over the rebuild) and the relocated Smash Palace, complete with bus and revving up for the warmer months. They specialise in great burgers, beer and wine, so perfect for a more casual night with friends.

Late Night Tour, Art Gallery, Corner of Gloucester and Montreal Street, Christchurch Central, Wednesday, 7.15pm

Meet at the front desk and the Art Gallery’s friendly knowledgeable guides will take you on a 45-60 minute tour – it’s free!

The Court Theatre, Scared Scriptless Comedy, Bernard Street Addington, Friday and Saturday night 10.15pm, $14-$16

If you’re looking for a laugh this is the place to go. Improvisers will turn your ideas into funny interactive comedy. There are plenty of restaurants and bars nearby in Lincoln Road for a meal and drinks beforehand.

Christchurch Casino, 30 Victoria Street, Christchurch Central

Place your bets and count your lucky stars. Christchurch casino has a quiz night every Wednesday, live bands, restaurants and three bars to make your way around.

Boo Radley’s, 98 Victoria Street, Christchurch Central

Live music Monday through to Saturday and a notable wine list and chef. Located upstairs from restaurant Tequila Mockingbird, this is the perfect place for a date.

Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre, Ferrymead Heritage Park, Heathcote

If there’s a group of you, get dressed up to suit the theme and prepare yourself for a night of laughter and murder mystery with a tram ride and some ghouls and ghosts thrown in for good measure!

Willowbank Dinner and Maori Concert, 60 Hussey Road, Harewood, Christchurch

Learn more about Maori culture and experience some of New Zealand’s best wildlife including one of the best kiwis at night experiences in the country. The tour ends with a 4-course dinner including Hangi cooked mains – ka pai!
