March - What is On in Christchurch?

Christchurch has some fantastic events coming up in Autumn! Whether you are after live music, a botanical showcase, sports events or film festivals there is something for everyone here in March.

Streets Children’s Day International Children’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in March and it now has a brand new home  in South Hagley Park. The free activities kick off very soon from 11am–3pm on Sunday 3 March. If you would love to spend more time with the little ones, you will give them a magic day out with bouncy castles, obstacle courses, pony rides, soap carving and much more!

Ellerslie Flower Show Right now we are gearing up for the popular Ellerslie Flower Show, it will be a colourful showcase of creative botanical ideas and conceptual displays. Sunday Bandstand During March from 12.00 - 1.30pm we enjoy our treasured Sunday Bandstand. This makes a wonderful return to our SummerTimes festival this year, with some talented local bands who are ready get your toes tapping! These heavenly sounds will permeate the beautiful Botanic Gardens on the Daffodil Lawn and also delight those near the sea at Scarborough Reserve in Sumner. So grab your picnic chairs and spend a relaxing and entertaining Sunday afternoon, music to your ears!

Feast of Canterbury Fancy yourself as a bit of a culinary  connoisseur? The Feast of Canterbury is a symbol of the thriving food and hospitality industry in the area. The festival is intended to highlight our quality produce and local talent, as well as the representing the celebratory lifestyle of the region. The feast also reinforces our belief that Canterbury is the food and wine hub of New Zealand. An opportunity for the regions finest wineries, chefs, growers get to showcase their skills, and very importantly contribute to local culinary tourism. The 'Dine' series is held within Canterbury and is featured at various local restaurants and cafes throughout March.

Belgium Beer and Mussel Festival The coveted Belgium Beer and Mussel Festival will feature an array of thirst quenching beverages along with exciting live stage acts. It starts this weekend and it is the place to be for a wide variety of steamed mussels and other tantalising goodies. Of course you'll find an impressive range of satisfying Belgium beers that will add to the ambience of the day. So be there between 10-6 this Saturday (9th) at the Riccarton Home Bush Marquee.

Le Race If you're a budding cycling ethusiast or just enjoy being a spectator, Christchurch and Akaroa will hold our yearly Le Race event. These fit and eager participants will leave the city at 8am on the Saturday 23rd and finish in the lovely French township of Akaroa - no doubt craving some down time and seasonal refreshments. A challenging ride with amazing scenery it will be a great day out. Whether you are joining the event or watching these enthusiast cycle fanatics a great day will be had by all.  Santana and the Steve Miller band If you love Santana and the Steve Miller band best you quicky reserve some tickets to show off your dance moves at CBS Canterbury Arena on the 17th. Christchurch has the facilities to host some great bands and this event is not to be missed by dedicated fans wanting to join in on their Sentient Tour.

Scott's Last Exhibition The Canterbury Museum are pleased to be the sole New Zealand venue for the internationally-acclaimed touring exhibition for 'Scott's Last Expedition' direct from London. A century after Scott met his tragic fate, we delve into his courageous journey and boy does he have a tale to tell. For an engaging activity and experience, travel Antarctica through Scott's eyes and come along to find out more about this fascinating pioneer.
